Regional unrest causes Indian public opinion to shift against Turkey

In the past few weeks, India has seen a sharp change of public opinion against Turkey, mainly because of Turkey's visible backing of Pakistan in the face of rising regional tensions. The action has led to widespread boycotts, strained diplomatic ties, and a reconsideration of the two countries bilateral ties.

The Trigger: Operation Sindoor and Turkey's Position

The breakthrough in India-Turkey relations came with the statement by India of Operation Sindoor, a military operation against terrorist networks in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. In India, Turkey's response—admiralty backing Pakistan and allegedly supplying Islamabad with drones and military personnel—was seen to be a planned attack to its national security interests.

Many Indians became even more irritated when President Erdoğan praised Pakistan's cautious attitude.

Economic Consequences: Boycotts and Trade Fall

The Indian public response has translated into several economic areas:

Consumer Goods and Retail: Turkish clothing labels are no longer available on major Indian e-commerce sites like Myntra and Ajio. Stores in places like Lucknow and Guwahati have taken Turkish products, including dry fruits and apples, off their shelves.

Aviation was Ground Services: The security clearance of Celebi Airport Services India, a Turkish company with operations at several Indian airports, was canceled by the Indian government over national security issues.

Tourism: Indian tourists have canceled trips to Turkey, resulting in big financial losses for tour agencies. Industry estimates suggest potential revenue loss of Rs 60-75 crore from Kolkata alone.

These measures have resulted in a 17% fall in Turkish exports to India and have overall bilateral trade reducing by close to 63% in comparison to earlier fiscal years.

Diplomatic Strain and Historical Context

Turkey’s unwavering backing of Pakistan, especially about the Kashmir conflict, has long been a cause of conflict in its interactions with India. Relations have been strained while a result of Turkey's outspoken condemnation of India's repeal of Article 370 and its strategy on international forums.

In trade, India has strengthened ties with Turkey's regional adversaries, like Greece, Armenia, and Cyprus. India signed a defense agreement with Armenia and has stood with Cyprus during its conflicts with Turkey.

Public Sentiment and Nationalistic Fervor

Reaction from the Indian public has been featured by an outburst of nationalistic fervor:

Social Media Campaigns: Hashtags like #BoycottTurkey have been trending, calling for citizens to boycott Turkish products and services.

Consumer Behavior: Consumers are increasingly questioning the origins of what they purchase, choosing local products over Turkish imports.

Academic and Cultural Exchanges: Academic institutions like Jawaharlal Nehru University have canceled Academic Exchanges with their Turkish counterparts.
